Health Tip: lose weight by sleeping well

Sure. Did you know that, besides your diet, sleep duration, recent studies suggest, is also strangely related to weight gain. More specifically, sleeping less than five hours, or more than nine hours, can increase the likelihood of weight gain.

Sleeping less than five hours, or more than nine hours, can increase the likelihood of weight gain.

It turns out that, in one study, a group of men subjected to repeated sleep deprivation showed a greater preference for high-calorie foods, for an overall calorie intake. Another study revealed that women who slept less than six hours a night (or more than nine) were more likely to gain weight than women who slept seven hours. In other studies, similar outcomes have been found for children and adolescents.

One possible explanation is that sleep duration affects hormones in charge of regulating hunger by stimulating appetite. As we’ve pointed out from the outset, the key is finding the right balance.

So there you have it, one more reason to get a good night’s rest.
