Do negative-calorie foods exist?

negative calories

The Internet and social media are replete with lists crowded by purported negative-calorie foods, which allegedly require more calories to digest than they provide. Most are made up of fruits and vegetables that belong in any healthy weight-loss program. This, unfortunately, doesn’t make them ‘negative-calorie’.

Scientific studies do not offer any evidence that such foods exist.

In theory, at least, you could lose weight by eating these types of foods; if they did in fact exist. Celery —a commonly cited example due to its composition (mostly water and fiber)—t he argument goes, helps you lose weight because digesting it will make you burn more calories than it contains.

Scientific studies, however, do not offer any evidence that such foods exist. This isn’t to say the vegetable is without its proven benefits. Celery, and other non-starchy vegetables, have very few calories and can come in handy as a healthy, low-calorie snack choice.
The bottom line is that limiting your choice of foods to just a handful of options can lead you to miss out on important nutrients. Our healthy weight-loss program is based on a sensible and balanced diet that provides foods from every different group. After all, the whole point is not to cut corners with your health, but rather to trim off that extra body fat.
